Pro- pharmaceutical spokesmen like Dr. Paul Offit and US Senator Dick Durbin have repeatedly stated that dietary supplements are unregulated and need stricter oversight due to the hazards they pose to your health. This is patently false, and you only have to look at the very first sentence on the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) website. There, it plainly states that. FDA regulates dietary supplements under a different set of regulations than those covering 'conventional' foods and drug products. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1. DSHEA): The manufacturer of a dietary supplement or dietary ingredient is responsible for ensuring that the product is safe before it is marketed. FDA is responsible for taking action against any unsafe dietary supplement product after it reaches the market. These products were found to contain . For example, data from the European Union indicate that pharmaceutical drugs are 6. FTC Also Regulates Marketing of Supplements. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is also quite active. Earlier this year, a number of weight loss companies were scrutinized by the FTC, and four were charged with false advertising. These included Sensa, Inc., Lean. Spa, L'Occitane, and HCG Diet Direct. Both the FDA and the FTC have full rights under current regulations to pull any products that are either unsafe or improperly marketed. So do we really have a problem with regulations? Any problems we have stem from lack of enforcement of the regulations already in place. Furthermore, drugs, which are heavily regulated at great cost, are among the most dangerous products on the market! Vioxx alone killed more than 6. By Dr. Mercola. Antidepressants are the most commonly prescribed class of medication other than antibiotics, taken by more than 1 in 1. Americans (and 1 in 4 among women aged 5. Many assume that such pills are the best available treatment for symptoms of depression, but in fact the difference between antidepressants and placebo pills is very small — and both are ineffective for most depressed patients. In a meta- analysis published in PLOS Medicine, only the most severely depressed showed any response to antidepressants at all and that response was quite minimal. This lack of effectiveness must be taken into consideration along with the drugs' side effects — of which there are many. However, antidepressants called serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may leave you with a new set of mental challenges, specifically symptoms of mania or bipolar disorder. SSRIs include drugs such as Paxil, Zoloft, Celexa and Lexapro. The risk increased by more than 3. SSRIs or another antidepressant called Effexor. The study was observational, which means it can’t prove that antidepressants caused the increased risk; however, the results suggest risk factors for mania should be considered when treating people with depression. But a growing collection of research suggests serious caution is warranted. Most recently, a JAMA Pediatrics study concluded that use of antidepressants, specifically SSRIs, during the second and/or third trimester increases the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children, even after considering maternal depression. After reviewing data from pregnancies in Quebec from 1. The use of SSRIs was associated with double the risk of autism in the child, while the use of two or more antidepressants increased the risk more than four- fold. SSRIs work by preventing the reuptake (movement back into the nerve endings) of the neurotransmitter serotonin. This makes more serotonin available for use in your brain, which is thought to improve your mood. However, serotonin is involved in fetal brain development, particularly during the second and third trimesters, so manipulating it with SSRIs could be posing a problem. Watch: Teen saves fellow student from choking on a cheese curd Watch: Teen saves fellow student from choking on a cheese curdA cafeteria security camera caught. The drugs are also known to cross the placental barrier and reach the fetus. The use of antidepressants among pregnant women more than doubled between 1. Susan Hyman, a former chairperson of the American Academy of Pediatrics committee on autism, told the NZ Herald: 8. And not just about birth defects you can see at the time of delivery but about longer- term consequences. However, past studies have. One study found boys with autism are three times more likely to have been exposed to SSRI antidepressants in utero than non- autistic boys, and those whose mothers used SSRIs during the first trimester were found to be at greatest risk. Whether you're looking to lose weight or just want a way to get rid of that nasty cold, eHow has all the answers you're looking for.
The Vitamin D Connection to Preventing Autism. The autism/antidepressant link may have to do with serotonin metabolism, which is also impacted by vitamin D. The link between vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women and the proportionate jump in autism has been highlighted by Vitamin D Council founder Dr. John Cannell and others. As reported by Newswise: 1. They also found evidence that the gene that makes the enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (TPH1) is inhibited by vitamin D hormone, which subsequently halts the production of serotonin in the gut and other tissues, where when found in excess it promotes inflammation. This mechanism explains many of the known, but previously not understood, facts about autism including: 1) The 'serotonin anomaly' low levels of serotonin in the brain and high levels in the blood of autistic children 2) The preponderance of male over female autistic children: estrogen, a similar steroid hormone, can also boost the brain levels of serotonin in girls 3) The presence of autoimmune antibodies to the fetal brain in the mothers of autistic children: vitamin D regulates the production of regulatory T- cells via repression of TPH1. This isn't the first time vitamin D has been implicated as a contributing factor to rising autism rates. Research shows taking SSRIs when you're pregnant may increase the risks of low birth weight, preterm birth, fetal death, infant death, neonatal seizures, and the need for mechanical ventilation. It was also found that children born to women who took antidepressants during pregnancy were more likely to develop attention- deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). That study also found a link between taking antidepressants during pregnancy and the risk of autism in the offspring, although it became less significant when material history of severe depression was taken into account. Another study, published in BMJ, specifically looked at the effects of SSRIs used during the first trimester of pregnancy and in the month before. The researchers analyzed data from nearly 3. Paxil (paroxetine) was associated with an increased risk of five birth defects, including heart defects and anencephaly, which is abnormal brain and skull formation. The use of Prozac (fluoxetine) was associated with two birth defects, including heart wall defects and abnormal skull shape (craniosynostosis). The increase in absolute risk was low; for instance, 1. Paxil. 1. 7Still, some birth defects occurred two to three times more often in babies born from women taking the drugs, and when the increased risk is combined with the many other studies showing harm, and few showing benefit, it poses a serious concern. In addition: Prolonged use of SSRIs during pregnancy was associated with lower language competence at the age of 3. Women using antidepressants during the second and third trimesters are more likely to give birth prematurely. Babies exposed to SSRIs in utero have an increased risk of clubfoot, low birth weight, and persistent pulmonary hypertension. Babies exposed prenatally to SSRIs had lower Apgar scores at birth, which is a measure of newborn well- being. SSRIs may disrupt fetal deep sleep, which is crucial for normal growth and development; they've also been linked to an increased risk of miscarriage,2. SSRIs at birth. SSRI Stories: Antidepressant Nightmares. The potential side effects of antidepressants stretch far and wide. For instance, research suggests taking an SSRI may double your risk of bone fractures. This is because serotonin is also involved in the physiology of bone. If you alter serotonin levels with a drug, it can result in low bone density, boosting fracture risk. A large study of post- menopausal women also found that those taking tricyclic antidepressants or SSRIs were 4. The research also found that overall death rates were 3. Among the most concerning side effects, however, especially to society as a whole, are suicidal thoughts and violent behavior. At SSRIStories. org, you can browse through a collection of more than 6,0. SSRIs, were potentially linked to serious side effects, including violent behavior. Categories include murder- suicide, postpartum reactions, road rage, school and other mass shootings, workplace violence, and more. According to the site: 2. Too often, the treatment intended to cushion the impact of unhappy life experiences results in suicide, homicide, alcoholism, or drug addiction. But families do not know, because they are not told. If they ever realize that the antidepressant was the problem, it happens only after serious damage has been done, which in too many cases is death. In a systematic review of 1. CBT. 2. 7Lead author Halle Amick, a research associate with the Research Triangle Institute- University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, told Medicine Net: . All we can say is that both seem to be equally effective . Our data didn't explore these issues, though they need to be considered when choosing between the two.'. For milder depression, and in addition to professional treatment for severe depression, the place to start is to return balance — to your body and your life. If you're currently taking antidepressants and wish to stop, be aware that you should wean off them gradually and under the care of a knowledgeable health care provider. As reported by SSRI Stories: 2. Every individual is slightly different, but it is important to withdraw slowly from these drugs, sometimes over a period of a year or more, and ideally under the supervision of a qualified and experienced specialist. In many jurisdictions, doctors who have the knowledge and the will to assist their patients to withdraw are hard to find. Withdrawal is often more severe than the original symptoms or problems for which the antidepressant prescription was given. Withdrawal can cause a wide range of symptoms, from headaches, brain 'zaps,' insomnia, lethargy, or fatigue, to feeling anger, irritation, or even extreme, uncontrollable rage, and countless others. This includes addressing your gut health, as mentioned above, and more: Dramatically decrease your consumption of sugar (particularly fructose), grains, and processed foods. Increase consumption of probiotic foods, such as fermented vegetables and kefir, to promote healthy gut flora. Mounting evidence tells us that having a healthy gut is profoundly important for both physical and mental health, and the latter can be severely impacted by an imbalance of intestinal bacteria. Avoiding sugar will also help toward this end. This is especially important during pregnancy, because if mother's flora is abnormal, her baby's flora will also be abnormal. Whatever organisms live in her vagina end up coating her baby's body and lining his or her intestinal tract. Get adequate vitamin B1. Vitamin B1. 2 deficiency can contribute to depression and affects one in four people. Optimize your vitamin D levels, ideally through regular sun exposure. Vitamin D is very important for your mood. In one study, people with the lowest levels of vitamin D were found to be 1. The best way to get vitamin D is through sun exposure or use of a high- quality tanning bed. Reasons You're Failing To Lose Fat. Oh no. I’ve done everything right, but it’s still not working for me. Why am I not losing weight???”I hear it so often that it’s beginning to haunt my dreams. Tons of people who are consistently failing to lose weight despite telling me that they’re doing everything right. What the hell? How can this be? I’ll tell you how. In fact, to help you solve this problem once and for all, I’m going to give you a list of 1. Let’s do this. You’re Eating Too Many Calories. Here’s how it works, folks. Everything we do burns calories, and everything we consume (minus obvious stuff like water) contains calories. Now, if the amount of calories being consumed is consistently greater than the amount of calories being burned, we gain weight. This is known as a caloric surplus, and it forces the body to store these left over calories in some form for later use. That form is most often body fat. The good news however is that the opposite of this scenario has the opposite result. Meaning, if the amount of calories being consumed is consistently less than the amount of calories being burned, we lose weight. This is known as a caloric deficit, and it forces the body to burn some alternative fuel source for energy instead. That source is most often body fat. What I’ve just described is the scientifically proven and always true energy balance equation commonly summed up as Calories In vs Calories Out. So if you’re not losing weight. No, Seriously. I skim articles all the time, too. So just in case you missed it, here’s your chance to go back up and read the first item on this list. It’s kinda important. Maybe You Didn’t Hear Me: YOU’RE EATING TOO MANY CALORIES! What, you thought I was joking? The reason you’re not losing weight is because you eat too much. A caloric deficit is the one big requirement here, and you simply don’t have one. I Know You Were Hoping For Other Reasons, But There Aren’t Any. Sorry to disappoint you, but there’s no big secret being hidden from you or any little tip that you’ve somehow missed. You’re just not creating the required caloric deficit. Simple as that. 5. Too Many Carbs After 7. PM Is Causing. Above all else, weight control and body composition really do revolve around calories. Eat more of them and you gain weight, eat less of them and you lose weight. Taaadaaa! And yes, I know you’ve probably heard otherwise. I get that you’ve probably seen some person claim that the key to weight loss is everything from carbs, to fat, to avoiding certain food groups, to eating 6 small meals per day, to not eating after a certain time at night, to only eating healthy “clean” foods or magical superfoods, and on and on and on. That’s all bullshit. Truth is, the key to weight loss (and weight gain) is and always will be calories. Anyone who disagrees is an idiot who should be ignored. I was searching for a program to genuinely help me lose body fat and get a six pack. I came across your website and the money back guarantee you offered. You're eating right and exercising, but the scale won't budge. The problem is that you're not eating enough calories to lose weight. Here's why. And the product they are likely trying to sell should be avoided, too. So while a lot of this other stuff definitely matters in terms of overall health and still definitely plays an important role in helping you improve your body, it’s always a distant second to calories when it comes to weight loss or a lack thereof. More about this here: The Truth About Fat Loss. You’re counting calories and eating healthy and you know for sure that you’re eating the right amount that you need to eat in order to lose weight. Yet, you’re somehow still not losing weight. If you have no motivation or cannot get motivated to lose weight, workout or eat healthy then these tricks show you how to get motivated to lose weight. Lose Weight By Juicing. Lose weight juicing? You most certainly can and will lose weight by juicing. The weight you lose will depend on how long you juice and. Well, guess what? You’re wrong. Underestimating. If there’s one thing damn near every nutritionist and diet professional can agree on, it’s that people trying to lose weight almost ALWAYSunderestimate how many calories they are actually eating. Discussion of weight loss on a Paleo diet, answering the question: will I lose weight on Paleo? I have lost almost 60 pounds, and I have noticed my bra cups have more room than before. I still have a lot more weight to lose, so I am waiting as long as possible. It happens all the time, and various weight loss studies prove it. Some people underestimate the quantity of food they consume (like thinking you ate 1 serving when you really ate 3 or 4), while others underestimate the amount of calories it contained (like thinking a meal was 5. Some underestimate both. Mistakes And Under- Reporting. In fact, many people just screw up during the serving size measuring process and take significantly more than they think they’re taking. Leigh Peel shows a few examples of this right here. Many other people just think there are certain “free” foods they can eat and not count. As if the calories they contain are magic calories that somehow don’t matter? Funny stuff. In reality, they matter just like any other calories matter, and they can add up pretty quick. Count everything. And don’t forget the people who eat “tiny” amounts of something here and there and assume it’s so insignificant that they don’t even need to bother counting it. The calories from that sort of thing adds up pretty quick, too. Once again, this is all stuff that is seen over and over again, and it commonly ends up accounting for hundreds or sometimes even thousands of accidental “I- didn’t- even- realize- it” calories. I actually show a typical real world example of this kind of thing right here. Hell, many people just flat out lie about how much they are truly eating. Because they’re apparently too embarrassed to admit what they eat (even to themselves), yet not too embarrassed to be and stay fat as a result. You’re Unknowingly Getting It Wrong Somewhere. Now I’m not accusing you of being an underestimater, or a bad measurer, or a liar, or someone who’s just bad at counting. I’m just telling you the facts. And the fact is, weight loss always happens when a caloric deficit is present. So if you claim to consistently be eating the right amount of calories yet still aren’t losing weight, then you’re simply not in a caloric deficit and had to have screwed something up somewhere. You’re exercising like crazy and burning tons and tons of calories through cardio and weight training and are therefore in the caloric deficit you need to be in for weight loss to occur. Yet, for some unknown reason, you’re still not losing weight. What could it possibly be? How’s that for a recipe for disaster? So you know the “tons” of calories you assumed you’ve burned doing cardio? Yeah, that didn’t actually happen. Based on all of the research I’ve seen, an average person doing a typical form of cardio at a typical intensity will burn around 7- 1. Think about that the next time you assume 3. It won’t. Not to mention, another big problem with overestimating calories burned is that it gives people the false mindset of “Oh, I was on the elliptical for 2. I can surely afford to eat this extra 1. You MIGHT Be Gaining Some Other Form Of “Weight”Okay, you got me? Well, it could be that you ARE in that required caloric deficit and you ARE losing fat, but you happen to be gaining something else that is counterbalancing your weight. See, even though we often use these words interchangeably, there’s a difference between weight loss and fat loss. Fat loss is always fat. Weight loss however can be fat, muscle, water, glycogen, poop or all of the above. And since most people only monitor their fat loss by monitoring their weight on the scale, your true progress can be temporarily hidden (this is extra true for women on a monthly basis). This is why it’s a good idea to do more than just weigh yourself. For example, take measurements, take pictures, and get your body fat percentage measured. Of course, the difference between “weight loss” and “fat loss” doesn’t change the calories in vs calories out equation. Nor does it change the fact that a caloric deficit is still the one and only requirement here. It just means that it’s possible to lose fat while gaining something else, and it can make it seem as though you haven’t lost any. BUT. Meaning, if week after week is passing and you’re still not losing any weight, it’s HIGHLYunlikely that you just so happen to be simultaneously gaining some other form of weight (like muscle) this consistently. Instead, it’s MUCH more likely that you’re just eating too many calories, not creating a caloric deficit, and are just not losing any fat, period. I cover this weight loss plateau myth in detail here: Muscle Weighs More Than Fat? Speaking of which. The Dreaded Weight Loss Plateau? If so, you’ve hit the dreaded weight loss plateau and that can only mean one thing: you’re still eating too many calories. Let me explain. There’s a few reasons for why this happens and why it’s so common, but it would honestly take its own article to fully explain (don’t worry, it’s on my to- do list). But the gist of it is simple. Eat a little less (or burn a little more) and you’ll magically break that plateau. This is one of those subjects that’s going to need WAY more than a quick mention in an article to properly cover. Hell, it’s going to need a full article of its own just to define what it actually is and isn’t. Most people using this term have no clue. Fortunately, I’ve recently written that article and I highly suggest checking it out (after finishing this one, of course): Starvation Mode: Is It a Myth or Is It Real? For now, allow me to briefly summarize the two most relevant points I make in that article. First, the people who think they aren’t losing weight because they are “in starvation mode” are wrong. Instead, they are just failing to lose weight due to one of the reasons we already covered (e. Happens all the time. The solution of course is to fix your diet and training program, actually stick to it, and make sure the one and only thing you need to be doing (creating a caloric deficit) is actually being done. The second point is that the definition of “starvation mode” most people have in their head is wrong and nothing more than a myth. So the idea that not eating enough is preventing you from losing any weight or even causing you to gain weight is just pure bullshit. However, there are certain aspects of “starvation mode” that are real, but they are better described as the “starvation response.” For example, your metabolic rate does slow down when you’re losing weight (due to a combination of adaptive thermogenesis and the fact that you weigh less than you used to). Do your boobs decrease alot when you lose weight? |
